CMV Retinitis
What’s
the meaning of CMV Retinitis?
·
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) virus may be infecting retina and potentially irreversible
vision loss due to retinal detachment and destruction.
The
retina is visual sensitive back portion of the eye. The retina contains the
light sensitive cells in eye, mainly two types rode and cone cells. Rode cells required
for night/low light vision and cone cells required for color vision. This
retina infection caused human cytomegalovirus. It occurs predominantly
immune system compromised peoples. This infection caused to retinal detachment
and destruction. After that lead to irreversible vision loss/blindness.
Signs
and symptoms
·
CMV Retinitis usually starting in one eye.
a)
Blare vision
b)
Blind spot
c)
Tiny/small spot or specks in vision.
d)
Floaters or flashes in the eye
e)
Loss of peripheral vision
Cause
Main caused weak immune system or
cellular immune status compromised led to virus reactive and spread in retina. Cytomegalovirus
is a type of herpes virus led to cytomegalovirus (CMV) Retinitis and
also cause congenital. Most affected in adult ages person. This virus reactive
in body like as leukemia, HIV/AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) and immunosuppressive
chemotherapy.
Cytomegalovirus
caused
infection is lead to retina cells necrosis or retina may be atrophy.
Transmission
occurs via infection body fluid, blood or transplanted organs.
It
may be affected in normal heathy person after intravitreal steroid therapy
cause local immune suppression.
treatment
There are at least 8 options for therapy of CMV retinitis.
Oral valganciclovir
Intravenous ganciclovir
Intravenous foscarnet
Intravenous Cidofovir
Intraocular ganciclovir device
Intravitreal ganciclovir
Oral leflunomide
Oral letermovir
