Bulging Eyes

Bulging Eyes/ proptosis/Exophthalmos

  • One or both eyes protrude from the eye socket.
  • Due to space taking lesion are swelling of muscles, fat and tissue behind the eye.
  • This situation eye more exposed the air it may be led to difficult to keep eye moist and lubricated.
  • Proptosis and Exophthalmos are medical term for the bulging eyes.
  • In this condition bulging or protruding eyeballs out form their normal position.
  • It may be affected one or both eyes most often caused by thyroid eye disease.
  • Bulging eye can create large amounts of pressure on optic nerve.
  • It has small risk for optic nerve and not before treated lead to permanently vision loss.
  • Inside eye pressure increase called as Glaucoma.
  • It may be developed after born caused by underlining medical condition or born with eye protrude.
  • White part of normal eye shouldn’t visible above the iris without lifting the eyelid.
  • One sign of bulging eye is white part of the eye show between iris and upper eyelid.

Causes for bulging eye

  • Most common cause is overactive thyroid gland called as hyperthyroidism.
  • Thyroid gland located front of the neck. It releases several hormones for control metabolism.
  • Hyperthyroidism occurs by releases too many hormones.
  • Most common cause for hyperthyroidism and bulging is autoimmune disorder called as grave’s disease. This condition, tissues around eye become inflamed.
  • In Autoimmune condition caused to body immunity system to produce antibodies
  • This antibody led to cell in thyroid gland overproduction of thyroid hormones.
  • This same antibody caused thyroid dysfunction and attraction to surrounding muscles of eye.

Other causes are ….

  • Cancer can affect to sympathetic nervous system this type of cancer called as neuroblastoma.
  • Cancer can affect to white blood cells this type of cancer called as leukemia.
  • Cancer can develop in soft tissues this type of cancer called as rhabdomyosarcoma.
  • Abnormal collection of blood vessels called as hemangioma.
  • An infection can affect tissue around the eye called as orbital cellulitis.

Other causes

  • An injury to the eyes
  • Bleeding behind the eyes
  • Abnormal shaped blood vessels behind the eyes
  • An infection of the tissue in the eye socket.
  • Cancerous tumors – caused by neuroblastoma and soft tissue sarcomas.

Symptoms of bulging eye

  • Appearance of Protrusion eye or bulging
  • Swelling of the eyelid
  • Excessive dryness of eye
  • Visible witnesses are between iris and upper eyelid.

  • Loss of vision/visual changes
  • Double vision
  • Eye pain and redness
  • Headache and fever
  • Pulsation on bulging eye
  • Sensitive to light
  • A hard time moving the eye

Physical exam

  • Vision test
  • Dilated eye exam
  • Slit lamp exam (used low power microscope and high intensity light)
  • Imaging lest, such as CT or MRI scans

Treatments of bulging eye

  • Eye drops
  • Antibiotics
  • Corticosteroids to ease inflammation
  • Eye surgery
  • Surgery, chemotherapy or radiation – treat cancerous tumors
